8th grade students at ACMS have been heavily studying the Holocaust through the reading of “The Diary of Anne Frank”. Yesterday they were given the privilege of hearing from a Holocaust survivor, through a live zoom call set up through the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Students were able to hear her story and engage with her through questioning. This was an honorable experience that will stick with our students for a lifetime!

It is a November Reading Contest celebrating National Picture Book Month. November is a National Picture Book Month. To honor the special memories made with and importance of reading to children, the ACMS Library is hosting a reading contest this month: Read a Picture Book with Someone. It could be your family members, friends, a pet, even your favorite stuffed animal! All you need to do is read a picture book with someone, take a selfie with the person you are reading with and be sure the book is in the photo. Email the photo to Ms. U along with your response to the following: What did you like most about reading a book with someone? No time for email? Stop by the library and show Ms. U the picture, then submit an entry on paper! Winners will be drawn for a special prize 11/26--the last day before Thanksgiving Break! Also, families, do not forget about the Family Fun Night on Tuesday, November 19. Come and read a picture book with your student and enter the contest: Family prizes will be awarded same night! To learn more about National Picture Book Month visit the Children's Book Council https://www.cbcbooks.org/cbc_event/november-is-picture-book-month/

Not Your Mamaw's Library The ACMS Library is more than just a place to read a book. While the library is still a place for teachers to bring their classes for research assistance from the school librarian or work in small groups, it is also a place for students to explore personal interests. The Maker Space offers students opportunities to be creative through the creation of self directed or guided art projects. Recently, during Morning Library (before school program), students had the opportunity to build their own mancala board set using recycled library book shelving and air dry clay. Others made memorable clay gifts for friends and family. The Social Commons provides students an area to practice social skills. They play board games or cards which promotes good sportsmanship. They also have access to a variety of building materials to create fantastic structures. Sometimes, they may even find Snap Circuits which allow them the experience of learning about closed circuits in a safe and creative way. The next time you visit ACMS, be sure to stop by the library. You never know what you will see or be able to do yourself!

Students in Mrs. Cowan’s room practiced writing in Ancient Sumerian cuneiform today. They learned the importance of written language and how it has evolved over time. They also may have learned patience in the process 😉😂

Good Evening Parents, Guardians, and Students, We have received, as expected, several questions about the new policy on backpacks. Beginning tomorrow, September 16th, backpacks and large purses will not be permitted on school grounds for students in grades 6 through 12. School issued Chromebook cases are allowed. If you have a personally owned device, you may bring that in a sleeve style case—just nothing bulky. A drawstring style bag is considered a backpack and not permitted. Small purses are permitted. A small purse is defined as one in which you cannot fit a standard size notebook. Students who have bags for extracurricular activities will be allowed to store those in a designated spot in the school. Beginning tomorrow, we will determine who needs a locker for their belongings and make accommodations. Please reach out if you have any questions. Thanks and have a good evening.
